THE ACT/FACT APPROACH AND ITS ADVANTAGES
In learning a foreign language, especially one as different from English as is Chinese, most adult learners learn best using a curriculum that incorporates both large amounts of language performance and communicative practice (termed ACT) and smaller amounts of analysis and explanation about the language, society, and culture (termed FACT). This presentation will discuss the details of how to present ACT and FACT in the Chinese language curriculum (both in and outside of class, including the not-so- new concept of the “flipped classroom”), drawing examples from a new eight-volume Chinese language course which the presenter and two coauthors completed last year.
ACT/FACT教學法的優點
對於多數已成年的學習者而言,最有效的語言學習法包括:(一)大量的語言練習和使用(簡稱 ACT);及(二)適量的發音、語法、社會和文化方面的分析與解釋(簡稱 FACT)。演講者將說明何時及如何在課堂內與課堂外進行 ACT 與 FACT(包括所謂“翻轉課堂”),且將示範一套去年剛完成的漢語教材以舉例之。
Brief Bio of Professor Kubler.
顧百里,1951年出生於瑞士,美國佛羅里達州人。臺灣大學中國文學碩士,康乃爾大學語言學博士。曾任美國國務院外交學院所屬美國在臺協會華語學校校長,後任外交學院亞洲暨非洲語文系主任。1991年應威廉大學之邀,創辦亞洲研究系,現任威廉大學史丹費爾德終身講座教授。曾任南京大學―約翰斯•霍普金斯大學中美文化研究中心美方主任、臺灣師範大學華語文教學硏究所客座教授、明德大学中文研究所教授、香港中文大學語言學研究所客座教授、哈佛北京書院院長等職。著有語言學和語言教學有關之書籍20本及學術論文50餘篇。
Cornelius C. Kubler is Stanfield Professor of Asian Studies at Williams College, where he founded and for many years chaired the Department of Asian Studies. He was Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese Language Training Supervisor and Chair of the Department of Asian & African Languages at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State, and served for 6 years as Director of the AIT Chinese Language & Area Studies School. He served from 2014-16 as American Co-Director of Hopkins-Nanjing Center and has directed intensive Chinese language training programs in the U.S., China, and Taiwan. He has been active in Chinese language test development and is author or coauthor of 20 books and over 50 articles on Chinese language pedagogy and linguistics.
