How to Teach Culture Efficiently in American High Schools

Presented by: Wei Liu

Over the years, K-12 Chinese teachers seems to have established for themselves a reputation of favoring teaching Chinese culture over the language itself.  This presentation will discuss how to teach culture efficiently so teachers can strike a balance between teaching the culture and the language.  Three questions will be discussed:

  1. Why do we need to be mindful of "efficiency" in teaching culture?
  2. What aspects of culture should be taught?
  3. How to teach them?

长年以来,美国K-12中文教学给人的印象是似乎偏重文化教学,学生语言水平的提升速度因而受到影响。本报告主要讨论在美国高中阶段如何以中文语言教学为基点进行文化教学,同时提高文化教学的效率,以期相辅相成。报告主要分三部分:

  1. 文化教学为什么要讲效率?
  2. 为提高效率,文化部分应该教些什么?
  3. 为提高效率,文化部分应该怎么教?

Implementing ACTFL Guidelines for
Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) in High Schools
at Beginning and Advanced Levels

 

Presented by: Congmin Zhao
In this presentation, the speaker will share video clips showing her daily classroom teaching.  The objective is to explore more effective and efficient classroom teaching methodologies.   Following each video clip, reflections on accompanying classroom management strategies and teaching plans will be discussed.   During these discussions, the speaker will refer to ACTFL’s benchmark guidelines for second-language teaching, including Performance Descriptors for Language Learners, NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, and World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages.

内容提要:
此工作坊将通过展示日常教学录像来分享讲者以高中学生为教学对象的初级和高级中文课堂教学的经验,并以ACTFL的二语教学理念(ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners, NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages)为纲,反思讲者针对高中学生所做的课堂规划和具体操作,旨在与中文二语教学同仁探讨更为有效的高中二语课堂的教学方法。

Presenters Information

Wei Liu (刘伟)

Wei Liu currently teaches first, second, and fifth-year Chinese and AP Chinese at the Hotchkiss School. Prior to Hotchkiss, for seven years she taught Chinese at Harvard University, Brown University, and Wesleyan University. From 2005-2016, she taught overseas and domestic summer programs administered by Duke University, Harvard University, and Middlebury.   Ms. Liu earned her M.A. in Chinese Instruction from Middlebury College and her B.A., M.A, and Ph.D. in education of political science in China.

Congmin Zhao (赵聪敏)

Congmin Zhao is an Instructor of Chinese at Phillips Academy, Andover MA. Before starting to teach at Phillips Academy in 2011, Congmin taught Chinese as a second language at the college level for eight years, first at Columbia University and then at Harvard University. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Beijing Language and Culture University and her Master’s degree with a concentration in Educational Technologies from Harvard University.
